On this Mother’s Day, I was inspired to share the role model my Mother was for me growing up. Children emulate who and what they see every day, and some of the things I appreciate in my Mother were the home cooking she prepared every day for us. I wish there had been more salads, and less starches, but it was rare for us to eat out. After my Father’s heart attack, we switched from fried foods to baked, red meats to more chicken/fish, white bread to wheat, grits to oatmeal, and medium to low sodium. It was quite a shift, but my Mother learned to season things differently and still make them tasty.
After we went to school, my Mother would put in one of the cardio workout tapes popular at the time and get her fit on. Her goal was to stay healthy and lose a few pounds, and my parents would also walk around the neighborhood several times a week. While she never talked about it or gave us lectures, I knew she did it and it was important to her.
So while I don’t consider my Mom a fitness guru, she did teach me the basics and importance of consistently working out and eating well. She set a great example, and I challenge all Mother’s to leave that legacy for their families!
Happy Mother’s Day!!
